Tips for Renting a Vehicle in Jamaica

  • There are car rental agencies in most major towns and cities. Clients must be at least 25 years old to rent a motor vehicle.
  • All drivers are required to carry a valid license. Jamaica recognizes valid International Driver's Licenses. North Americans may use their country's license for up to three months per visit. United Kingdom residents may use theirs for up to twelve months, and Japanese visitors may use their licenses for up to one month.
  • The driver and passengers are required to wear safety belts, and children under 3 years old must travel in infant carriers.
  • Service stations are found island wide. Many are open every day.

Driving in Jamaica

  • Jamaica has an extensive road network, connecting all major towns and cities. Major highways run from the north to the south and east to west of the island. These highways are modern and smooth toll roads. Transportation infrastructure is comprised of urban streets, rural, and mountain roads.
  • Speed limits are posted in kilometers per hour (km/h). The speed limit is 50kmph (30mph) in built-up areas and 80kmph (50mph) on highways.
  • In Jamaica, we drive on the left side of the road and most vehicles are right-hand drive.
  • Given our mountainous terrain, our rural roads can be winding, bumpy and narrow in some areas, while town center streets are wider, but busier.
  • Another thing to note is that we use car horns more than any other country in the world. Behind the wheel, there’s no stopping us. From a slight beep that says “hello,” two toots meaning “thank you” and a blaring horn telling you “to get out of the way” you’ll find that more often than not, your driving soundtrack is made up of hoots.
  • Seat belts are legally required and using a mobile phone while driving without hands-free equipment is illegal.
  • You'll easily find gas stations in all towns and cities. Gas station attendants will assist you when you pull up. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, but it's a good idea to bring cash as well. Electric vehicle charging is also available at locations across the island. Find charging locations offered by JPS and Evergo.
  • A drive through Jamaica is more than a journey - it's an experience of the island itself. From vibrant town streets and seaside roads to panoramic routes through the hills, each trip offers breathtaking scenery and a closer look at the rhythm of Jamaican life.
