Jamaican National Hero and leader of the Pan-Africanist movement, Marcus Garvey, founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) with the aim of unifying and improving conditions of people of colour worldwide. The UNIA chapters all established a ‘Liberty Hall’ as their central hub. Jamaica’s Liberty Hall is still open and located in the island’s capital city of Kingston. True to its original purpose, Liberty Hall strives to improve black lives with exhibits, lectures, events, a research library, homework centre and summer arts programme for children. Garvey’s life, legacy and philosophies are taught through engaging tours with interactive multi-media at Liberty Hall.
